For anyone in the UK aged 16 or over. One page, signed and dated in pen in front of one witness.

Your full name, including any middle names.

Exactly as you want it, including any middle names.

Where you live now, with your postcode.

Today's fine, or the day you got married. Not a future date. You write the date you sign it by hand.

Nothing you type leaves your device. It's all made right here.

Quick PSA before you pay for one.

You can make your own deed poll, for free, right here. It's one page. I paid about £40 for one before I knew that, like a mug, and I don't want you doing the same.

Plenty of sites charge that much for this one page, then try to sell you an online vault for it. An online vault. For a piece of paper.

If you'd rather I printed it on the nice paper with the seal and posted it, I'll send you two for £15. That covers my time, the paper and the postage.

Or for £45, I'll do the deed poll and tell everyone for you. No hard sell. I just think it's way too easy to get ripped off, and it's annoying.

How to sign it properly.

This is the bit that makes it count. Five minutes, one pen, one witness.

  1. 1. Print two or three Organisations want originals. So one can be on holiday with the DVLA while you use another. Each copy gets signed and witnessed separately.
  2. 2. Pick your witness One person is enough. Anyone over 18. Tip: pick someone who isn't a close relative and doesn't live with you, because some organisations are fussy about that.
  3. 3. Sign in pen New name, old name, date. Sign each copy twice, in your new name and your old one, in front of your witness, and write the date. Pen, not electronically. The passport office won't accept an electronic signature.
  4. 4. Their bit They sign and fill in the box. Their signature, name, address and occupation, on every copy. That's it. It's your proof from that day.

I use one witness on my own deed polls, and I've used them with the DVLA and the passport office myself.

Changing your name as part of transitioning?

This deed poll is for you too. Here's the short version of what it does and doesn't cover.

  • Your name This deed poll works for you. You don't need a Gender Recognition Certificate, a doctor's letter or surgery to change your name.
  • Your title Your title's your call. Mr, Ms, Mx or anything else. You just tell people which one you use, no paperwork needed.
  • Gender markers They're a separate thing. Your passport needs a letter from your doctor. Your GP can update your NHS record. Changing your legal gender needs a Gender Recognition Certificate.
  • Your privacy Don't enrol it if privacy matters. Enrolled deed polls are published in The Gazette. The free one here is just as valid and stays private.

I'll change your name and your title on everything I update for the £45. Gender markers aren't included yet. I haven't deep dived into how every organisation handles them, but it's coming soon.

Stuck? Email hello@mynamechanged.com or DM me on Instagram or TikTok. Happy to help, even if you're doing it all yourself.

Is a homemade deed poll legal?

Yes. A deed poll you make yourself (an unenrolled deed poll) is legal proof of your new name in the UK. It needs to be dated, signed in pen in your old and new names, and witnessed. You don't need a solicitor. GOV.UK says some organisations may want an enrolled one, so if you're not sure, ask them first.

How many witnesses do I need?

One. In law, a deed you sign yourself needs one witness, and the passport office's own guidance asks for at least one. GOV.UK's template has space for two, so if an organisation asks for two, get a second person to sign as well.

Who can witness a deed poll?

Anyone aged 18 or over who watches you sign it. They don't need to be a solicitor. It's best to pick someone who isn't a close relative and doesn't live with you, because some organisations won't accept those.

Do I need to enrol my deed poll?

No. Enrolling puts it on public record with the High Court and publishes your new name in The Gazette. It's optional, costs £53.05 and you have to be 18 or over. Most people don't bother.

Does a free deed poll work in Scotland?

Yes. If you were born or adopted in Scotland, you can also record your new name with National Records of Scotland, which updates your birth record. That's optional.

Can I use it for my passport and driving licence?

Yes. The DVLA wants the original, not a photocopy. The passport office usually wants one document showing you already use your new name too, like a bill or bank statement from the last 12 months. I don't do passports yet, so that one's yours to sort. My passport tips →

Can I use this deed poll if I'm trans or non-binary?

Yes. You don't need a Gender Recognition Certificate, a doctor's letter or surgery to change your name by deed poll. Changing the gender on your passport or NHS record, or your legal gender, are separate processes. If you use my £45 service, I'll change your name and your title, but I can't do gender markers yet.

Can a deed poll change my title?

No. GOV.UK says a deed poll can't change your title (Mr, Mrs, Ms, Mx). You just tell organisations which one you use, so you don't need to pay extra for a "change of title" add-on. If I do your name change, I sort your title through the form at no extra cost.

How old do I need to be?

16 or over to make your own deed poll. My £45 service is for adults, 18 and over.

How many copies should I make?

Two or three, each one signed and witnessed. Some organisations, like the DVLA, want an original, so it means you've still got proof while one's in the post.

Do you see what I type?

No. Your deed poll is made on your phone or computer, and nothing you type is sent to me or anyone else. If you've said yes to cookies, I only see that a deed poll was made, and the reason if you picked one.

Deed poll sorted. Now tell everyone.

Or let me do that bit. One form, £45, deed polls included, and I send your new name to the DVLA, HMRC, your council, GP and more.
