Passports

The one I get asked most. Passports aren't in the £45 yet, but here's how to do it yourself.

Do you change my passport?

Not yet. Passports aren't included in the £45 right now, so it's one you do yourself with HM Passport Office. The rest of your list - the DVLA, HMRC, your council, GP and more - I can take off your hands.

How do I change the name on my passport?

Two ways. Apply online with HM Passport Office, or pick up a paper form from the Post Office and post it. I've used the online form three times. It's really easy, and it's cheaper than the paper form. Apply on GOV.UK.

What do I send to change my passport after marriage?

Your marriage or civil partnership certificate. You get a brand new 10-year passport in your new name, and pay the standard passport fee. GOV.UK has the full steps and today's fee.

What do I need to change my passport with a deed poll?

Your deed poll, plus one document that shows you're already using your new name, like a utility bill or bank statement from the last 12 months. If you change your name with me and need a deed poll, it's included in the £45. GOV.UK lists what counts.

How much does it cost to change the name on my passport?

£102 if you apply online (October 2026), paid to HM Passport Office. The paper form costs more, and Fast Track costs more again. I don't do passports yet, so this is one you sort yourself. Fees change, so check GOV.UK for the latest.

How do I add a photo to an online passport application?

I'd recommend a digital photo code. Most photo booths and photo shops can give you one to type into the online form, and it saves you fighting with the lighting at home. You can take one yourself on your phone, as long as it meets the photo rules.

How long does it take to change the name on my passport?

GOV.UK says to allow three weeks for the standard service, and updates the current wait on its website. Need it faster? The 1 week Fast Track service is the quickest you can use for a name change. The 1 day service is for renewals only. When I used Fast Track, getting an appointment was easy and my passport turned up a few days later. Fast Track on GOV.UK.

Do I have to change my passport straight away?

No. Your passport stays valid in your old name until it runs out. If it's only a couple of years old, you could wait until it's due anyway and save yourself the fee. Just book travel in whatever name is on it.

Should I change my passport before my honeymoon?

Only if you can travel in the new name. The name on your tickets has to match the name on your passport, so if your passport's still in your old name, book in your old name and change it when you're back.

Can I get a passport in my married name before the wedding?

Yes, two ways. You can apply up to three months before your ceremony, with a form signed by the registrar or minister doing your ceremony. That passport is post-dated, so you can't use it until after the wedding, and your old one is cancelled when you apply. Or change your name by deed poll first, because you can change your name any time, for any reason, then apply with your deed poll like anyone else. Either way, check it works with any travel you've got booked.

Price and what's included

How much does it cost to change your name with My Name Changed?

£45, one-off. That covers every organisation you pick, your deed poll if you need one, your DVLA pack and the postage.

Is it really everything for £45?

Yes. Pick one organisation or all nine, it's still £45. No add-ons, and no extra charge for deed polls or copies, which other companies often charge for.

Which organisations do you update?

Energy, water, your council, your GP, HMRC, the electoral roll, TV Licensing and the State Pension (DWP). For the DVLA, I prepare your licence and V5C pack and post it to you, ready to go. See what's included.

What isn't included?

Passports, banks, insurance, private pensions and gender marker changes aren't included yet. I'm adding more. Need help with something that isn't on the list? Ask me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Can I add an organisation later?

Yes. Not sure about one yet, like your water company? Leave it off and email me when you know. Still £45.

Can I get a refund?

I start work straight away. If you cancel before I've started, you get a full refund. If I've already started, I'll stop what I can and refund the part I haven't done. The full terms are here.

How it works

How does a done-for-you name change work?

You fill in one short form and pay. I prepare your paperwork, send your new name to every organisation you picked and post you a DVLA pack that's ready to go. See every step.

How long does it take to change your name?

The form takes about five minutes. Your welcome email arrives straight away and everything else goes out quickly. After that, each organisation updates its records on its own timeline.

Do I need to post you anything?

No. Nothing goes in the post to me. If I need to see your proof, a phone photo is fine. No scanner needed.

What do I do with my DVLA pack?

Follow the instructions inside. They tell you exactly what goes in which envelope. Then post it.

What's a Letter of Authority?

It lets me update things on your behalf. It arrives by email after your welcome email, and you sign it on screen with your finger or mouse. Most updates wait for it, so sign it as soon as it lands.

Will I know what's been sent?

Yes. Where I can, I copy you in, so you can see your updates go. You also get an email when your DVLA pack has been posted.

Proof and deed polls

What proof do I need to change my name?

If you're married or in a civil partnership and taking your partner's surname, or double-barrelling or combining both surnames, your certificate. For any other change, or if you've got no proof at all, I'll prepare you a deed poll. The form works out which you need.

Do I need a deed poll to change my name after marriage?

Not always. Your marriage or civil partnership certificate is enough if you're taking your partner's surname, or double-barrelling or combining both surnames. You need a deed poll if you're blending them into a new surname (Mainstone + Stein = Mainstein), moving your maiden name into your middle name, or changing any other part of your name. The form works out which you need, and a deed poll is included. Using your certificate? You still get a free backup deed poll, so if you've only got one copy and it's on holiday with the DVLA, you've still got proof of your new name. My full marriage guide →

What is a deed poll?

A one-page legal document that says you've stopped using your old name and started using your new one. You sign it in front of a witness. If you need one, I prepare it and post it to you, and it's included in the £45. My full UK guide →

Can I make my own deed poll?

Yes, and it's free. It's one page, signed in pen in front of a witness, and you don't need a solicitor. I made a free template you can fill in on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Make yours free here →

I've lost my marriage certificate. Can I still change my name?

Yes. Just say you haven't got proof on the form and I'll prepare a deed poll for you instead. It's included in the £45.

Your reason

Do I need a reason to change my name?

No. Marriage, divorce, family, in memory of someone, or just because. Every reason's a good one.

Can I go back to my maiden name after divorce?

Yes, and you don't have to wait for the divorce to finish. Once you've separated, you can go back to your old name whenever you're ready. It's done with a deed poll, and that's included.

Can we double-barrel or combine our surnames?

Yes. Double-barrelling or combining both surnames just needs your marriage certificate. Blending them into something new (Mainstone + Stein = Mainstein) or making one up needs a deed poll, and that's included.

Can I change my first or middle name?

Yes. First names, middle names, adding one or removing one. It's done with a deed poll, and that's included.

Who can use My Name Changed?

Anyone 18 or over in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland there are two exceptions for now: I can only update DVLA driving licences (not ones issued in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland), and I don't update rates with NI Direct yet.

Weddings and gifts

Can I pay for my name change before the wedding?

Yes, it's called Save the Name. Pay £45 now (each of you buys your own if you're both changing), and your code never expires. I'll send you a nudge after your wedding. How Save the Name works.

Can I buy a name change as a wedding gift?

Yes. It's £55 for one person or £90 for two, and comes as a printed voucher posted to you, with a blank envelope to pass it on in. It never expires. See the gift.

Trust and your data

Is My Name Changed a law firm?

No. My Name Changed is the UK's first done-for-you name change service. It isn't a law firm, government body, notary or template seller. I do the admin of changing your name, so you don't have to.

Who actually does the work?

Me, Anna Akinyosoye. I started My Name Changed after changing my own name four times. It's not a call centre, it's me. More about me.

Is my data safe with you?

I'm registered with the ICO (ZC097416) and payments are handled by Stripe. This isn't a big corporation. It's just me, looking after your data the way I'd want mine looked after. How I handle your data.

What if something goes wrong?

If I've made a mistake, I fix it and resend it for free. If an organisation rejects something for another reason, I chase it up, keep you copied in and do my best to get it sorted. My Free-Fix Promise.

What if I get stuck?

Email or DM me any time. It's just me, not a call centre, and I'll get back to you as soon as I physically can.

Didn't find it? Just ask me.

Email me at hello@mynamechanged.com or DM me on Instagram or TikTok. Even if it's nothing to do with the service, I'll point you in the right direction.
